H-90 (H being 1000 hours): A destroyer was seen close to the beach, followed very soon by another.
H-77: Destroyers started firing. First shots landed in the water, but were soon on the beach and the higher ground behind. Firing was with reduced charges and evidently in reduced volume also; it was not heavy. This fire was scheduled for H-1 to H-5. Craft were seen approaching about the time fire opened.
H-45: Small craft were announced to be assembling in rendezvous areas. They appeared to be headed toward the beach following larger naval vessels. They appeared to be in column until 0940 when first wave fanned out into a rough line or wedge formation.
